The M249 light machine gun, also known as the SAW, is an American version of the Belgian FN Minimi. The gun has been introduced in 1984 due to the lack of firepower in small units. It fires 5.56 NATO rounds. The gun is rather heavy (10 kg when loaded) and therefore reduces the soldier's mobility, but provides great firepower, with an effective range of 1 km.
